How to open a KML or KMZ file online
- Drag your file onto the map, or choose it from your device. You can open several files at once.
- The map zooms to your data. Switch between Map and Satellite with the control at the top right.
- Click a shape, or a row in the list, to read its name, description and attributes, along with its length or area.
- Need the data in another format? Download it as GeoJSON.
What is the difference between KML and KMZ?
KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is an XML text format that stores points, lines, polygons and their styles. It was created for Google Earth and is now an Open Geospatial Consortium standard. KMZ is a KML file compressed as a ZIP archive, often with images bundled alongside it. This viewer reads both, so you do not need to unzip anything.
What this viewer shows
- Shown: points, lines, polygons, multi-geometries and GPS tracks, with their names, descriptions, attributes and KML line and fill colors.
- Not shown: image overlays, 3D models, network links and tours. A notice appears when a file contains them.
- Not loaded, on purpose: images in descriptions and external icons, so opening a file does not contact servers named inside it. Points use a plain marker.
Lengths and areas are calculated on a sphere, so treat them as close estimates, not survey results.
Viewing KML without Google Earth
Google has announced that the Google Earth Pro desktop app can no longer be downloaded after June 25, 2027. Copies already installed keep working, and Google points users to Google Earth on the web and its mobile apps (Google's announcement).
If you only need to check what is in a file, a browser viewer like this one is enough. For editing, analysis or print layouts, use desktop GIS software such as QGIS.
Convert your file
Our converters also run in the browser. Their interface is currently in Indonesian: KML to Shapefile, KMZ to Shapefile, KML to Excel and KMZ to Excel.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a KML file without Google Earth?
Drop the file onto the map on this page, or choose it from your device. It opens in your browser, with nothing to install and no sign-up.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Your file is read by your own browser and is not sent to our server. We only log that the viewer was used, never the file name or contents. The map background loads from OpenStreetMap or Esri, so those services can see which map area you view.
Why is part of my file missing?
This viewer shows points, lines and polygons. Image overlays, 3D models, network links and tours are not displayed, and a notice tells you when a file contains them.
Is there a file size limit?
We set no limit, because the file is handled by your device. Very large files can make the page slow, depending on your memory.
Is Google Earth Pro going away?
Google has announced that the desktop app can no longer be downloaded after June 25, 2027. Copies already installed keep working, and Google points users to Google Earth on the web and its mobile apps.
